What does
FIORI mean?
SAP Fiori is a set of apps, newly written by SAP,
that address the most broadly and frequently used SAP functions, such as
workflow approvals, information lookups, and self-service tasks. They provide
simple and easy-to-use access across desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
Fiori is more than just a new user interface. It
is a set of cross-device applications that, among other things, allow users to
start a process on their desktop and continue it on a tablet or smartphone. SAP
is developing its Fiori apps on its latest user interface framework, SAPUI5.

It is important to note that Fiori will never be
a comprehensive user interface replacement for SAP. The reason for this is
that most SAP ERP processes cannot be performed with Fiori, not now or in the
future. Those SAP processes are simply too complex in their design and do not
lend themselves to deployment on a smart phone or tablet. Everyone knows, for
example, that you can do much more with the desktop version of Netflix than you
can on the Netflix iPhone or iPad app. Likewise; it is difficult to take a
complex SAP process and dumb it down to the point where you can deploy it on a
smartphone.
Using modern UX design principles, SAP Fiori delivers a role-based,
consumer-grade user experience across all lines of business, tasks, and
devices. SAP Fiori has multiple access options, with the browser based solution
being the most popular one. Though there are other options available and others
under development, the browser based option is still the most preferred option
primarily due to its simplicity and ease of use. Learn to build Fiori apps using

Let us look into the different options available for users to run
Fiori apps:
SAP FIORI using browser
SAP Fiori is a web based application primarily targeted for the
mobile phones. The Fiori framework is designed in such a way that the
applications could be used from any device (mobile, tablet or desktop) using
the standard browsers available with the system.
Web based Fiori apps can basically be delivered in 2 ways:
On-premise, where the apps are installed on an on-premise SAP NetWeaver
Gateway server. SAP Net Weaver training by
experts give you complete knowledge of the technology.
Cloud Edition, where the apps are available on the cloud through the
HANA Cloud Platform.
SAP FIORI Client:
Fiori client is a Kapsel (meaning “container” in German) runtime
container that needs to be installed on the phone and runs the same Fiori apps
(which are meant for the browser) using the container webview. It caches the
application assets (like javascripts, css, images, etc) and thus provides a lot
of performance benefits. The client can be downloaded from the public app
stores for iOS, Android or Windows and can be configured.
SAP FIORI Hybrid
Applications
SAP Fiori applications, which are originally available for the
browser, can be packaged as self-contained native apps. It delivers a robust
user experience because only the business data uses the network resources. It
also allows certain SAP Fiori apps be used in offline mode. Use the SAP Mobile
Platform SDK to package the apps as native apps for iOS or Android.
SAP FIORI Native
Applications
Based on popular platform swift to develop and deliver SAP FIORI
native apps for iPhones and iPads. We need to wait for a few more months to
hear more on this development. With Android being the most popular consumer
mobile OS, it is not far that we can hear a similar partnership with Google.
FIORI needs HANA
Sometimes lost in the debate is the fact that, to
use Fiori, customers need to be running HANA, SAP’s new in-memory database,
underneath their SAP products. SAP explicitly says that HANA is a hard
requirement for Fiori fact sheet apps and Fiori analytic apps. For
transactional apps, "They run best on an SAP HANA database, but can also
be ported to other databases with acceptable performance." A source with
Fiori and HANA experience, however, says that without HANA, Fiori transactional
app performance is slow on mobile devices and, as a result, may not deliver a
positive user experience. (Learn database
concepts from SAP HANA training).
SAP Fiori is a comparatively new technology and will continue to
adopt advance techniques with every release. Thus, Fiori consultants have an
additional responsibility of self-learning and mastering new features.
